I just came back from a 4 day trip to DISNEYS Animal Kingdom Lodge. This is a 5 star Disney Resort that perfectly captures the essence of Africa. It is a blend of culture and nature through the genius architecture, entertainment and food. The resort is surrounded by a “savanna” that is filled with zebras, giraffes, antelopes, elks, kudus, gazelles, wildebeest’s and exotic birds. They roam freely beside your balcony (if you have a savanna view) and around the lobby borders. It’s incredible how it makes you feel to roam the hotel and look over to see a giraffe peaking inside the window! As you approach the hotel building itself, it is pretty unassuming with its grass roof and wood carved architecture. But as you step out and into the lobby, an African native cast member will greet you warmly, “Jambo! Welcome Home.” The lobby itself generates the complete awe and magic that Disney is famous for. There are couches and comfy seats all around and a large traditional mud fireplace. There are also a few TVs playing Disney cartoons – which are perfect for the little ones while you check in and get your bags together. As you proceed to the room, the magic continues. The décor partnered with the view is breathtaking. The furniture is hand carved, marble vanity counter tops, LCD HDTVs, modern fixtures and a balcony with a view that will transport you straight to Africa!
There are 3 restaurants Located on the ANimal KIngdom Lodge property. A quick service restaurant called “Mara” that is very affordable, a Buffet that mimics an open African market called “Boma”, and “Jiko” which is more fine-dining. (It’s your chance to get pretty and wear your heels! Reservations are strongly recommended.)
You can honestly spend an entire week at this resort and never leave.
There is an 11,000 square foot pool, with hot tubs and shallow kiddies wading areas. Located along side the pool area is a cute little flamingo pond. Walk a little bit farther and there is a big shaded playground!
There is a Full service Spa and a Fitness center, and a big Arcade but I honestly didn’t explore those too much.
There is a real cool feature called the Simba Playhouse. From 4:30p-Midnight, cast members will babysit your kids (ages 4-12) so the adults can have a date night. This concept is so thoughtful!
During the Day there are TONS of free activities for all ages. There are 8 activities a day that are geared toward teaching kids about Africa. If you attend the activity and complete it – you received a special bead. You can collect all 8 of the beads and they give you a special string to tie them to. This was the most fun for me and Daisy and my sister in law.
There are also activities happening at all hours of the day. There are cultural events like medallion rubbing, face painting, African music classes, folktales by the fire pit, a night vision animal viewing safari, and a nightly movie under the stars!
It was hard to leave this resort. One of my favorite little details was how stroller friendly the whole place is. All the doors are automatic to you don’t have to hold them open. The elevators were big enough for my double stroller. There were ramps leading to every inch of the hotel. If you have a wheelchair or a stroller, don’t worry, you can access all the activities and view of this magnificent resort. I am so glad we chose Animal Kingdom Lodge.
I love the African theme we have running this month in our family. We have spent a lot of time with animals native to African, eaten some delicious African food, and learned a lot. ANImal Kingdom Lodge will go on my list of “must returns”!
I wonder what the next Months Theme will be?!?!
