A beautiful green lawn makes any garden look like an outdoor paradise. It provides a relaxing place to hang out on a summer’s afternoon, throw barbecues and birthday parties, and let your children run around freely.
But you need to take off your grass to keep it looking bright and verdant. If you neglect your lawn it can end up looking faded, patchy, and sad. If you’re not particularly green-fingered, the good news is that it isn’t too difficult to keep your garden looking shipshape. As long as you follow these four tips, you will help your lawn to thrive for many years to come.
Give it plenty of water
The most important two things a lawn needs are sunlight and water. If you live in an area with plenty of rainfall year-round then your grass may not need too much additional help. But if you are based in a dry region or going through a hot spell, there is a good chance your lawn could suffer and die. Make an effort to water your grass regularly in the warm months, either with a hosepipe or an automated lawn sprinkler for extra convenience.
Drain the grass
Conversely, too much water could also be a danger to your beautiful lawn. The water it gets needs to be able to run off into the soil, and poor drainage can cause it to pool in certain areas. If this happens, it is easy to improve drainage by going round with a fork or similar implement and making holes to aerate it.
Feed it
Like all plants, grass needs to be fed. It is recommended that you give your lawn some fertilizer at least twice a year. The fertilizer you choose should contain all the essential nutrients, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphate. By mixing it with water in a watering can, you can feed and water the grass at the same time.
Get rid of weeds
Although weeds, such as dandelions, are not necessarily a risk to the health of your lawn, they can be an eyesore. To keep your lawn clean, you will want to mow your lawn regularly. Cutting the grass once a week will prevent weeds from growing and spreading their seeds about. Make sure you do not mow your lawn too short, as this puts too much stress on your grass and makes it more likely to dry out during a hot spell.
These are just a few of the ways to prevent your lawn from deteriorating and give it the best possible chance to survive year round. If you need some assistance to improve the condition of your grass, you can always call in a professional lawn care company such as Big League Lawns to help you out.
