If you ever hear your children saying that they “aren’t clever enough,” or are struggling in school, it can feel like a dagger to the heart. We might think that our children need more support to get their grades, or we may resign ourselves to the fact that they aren’t academically minded. But the fact is that now, with so much research being undertaken into the neuroplasticity of the brain, one thing is true: there is no such thing as being clever and not clever. Generally speaking, anybody can increase their knowledge and sharpen their intellects. Let’s show you some ways how being clever is not something you were born with, but is actually a skill.

The Skill of Gathering Information

If you read up on something enough, it will gradually help you gain a deeper understanding. It’s not about knowing something or not knowing something. Take, for example, the game of Scrabble. It’s not about having a brain that allows you to find the words in a bunch of letters, but it’s about training your brain to recognize these things. While you can use an abundance of Scrabble cheat resources to do this for you, it can help you repeat this action that solidifies something in your brain. If you do something for long enough, you become very proficient in it. People don’t fall out of the sky with a brain for a dictionary; it’s about putting the words into your brain and learning the importance of playing around with letters.

The Skill of Your Mood

When in the process of learning, if you think you’re not able to learn something, surprise surprise, you will not be able to learn it! If you remember back to school, being bored out of your wits, this is the reason you weren’t learning. This is because you were just not interested. If we are to help our children learn things, we can help them to change their mood or state. If you want your children to learn things and to solidify them, you need to combine the learning materials with a state of joy. This means that your child has to be naturally interested in learning a certain subject, but how do you make it interesting and memorable for them? You can do this by avoiding the traditional teaching methods. Instead, do things to make the subject or facts memorable, such as turning it into a song. But you should also be aware of how your children learn best. One of the big reasons we don’t learn things well is because we have a very specific way of learning information. Some people are visual learners, some are auditory, and some can be a combination of learning styles. When you find out what your learning style is, this can be the key to unlocking your potential.

The Skill of Practice

Learning is a skill rather than something that you either have or do not have. If you want to learn something, don’t go with traditional learning styles, but venture beyond this. One of the best ways to improve your children’s skills is to play games, as this encourages competition and more engagement in a subject. This is something that, as parents, we need to remember too.

Becoming clever is a skill, but it’s about finding the right ways to solidify that skill. We’re all different, whether it’s you or your children trying to learn something, we must remember that being clever is not about the subject, but about the skill.
