When you are a proud homeowner, the last thing that you want to worry about is cracks in your foundation. The foundations that are holding up your house should be solid and they are designed to last. There are different types of soil out there and we build on all of them. The thing is, you could have the best contractor out there to help you with your home build, but it’s the soil that changes over time, not the house itself. The trouble is that while the soil changes, it doesn’t always do it evenly or in the same direction – which then has an impact on the concrete foundations of your house.
You need to avoid giant cracks in the foundation of the house as much as possible, but it’s not always going to be easy to do that. You can bet that the help of the right foundation repair company is there for you when you need it, but you need to hop on it quickly for the right help. You need to ensure that you are aware of what to look for to know that your home foundations are definitely in trouble, and we’ve put together a list of signs that will show you that your home is not as solid as you think it is. Let’s go!
- There’s some odd smells in the house, right? Musty and unusual smells may not immediately make you think of the foundations of your house, but you should be considering it if you have noticed a change in the scent of your house. It can point to an unsettled foundation and when the house isn’t flat anymore, there are new gaps in the structure that previously were not there. If you notice a strange smell, call in the experts and they’ll be able to tell you whether the foundations are the problem.
- It’s a little warm, isn’t it? Most newly built homes are sealed with drywall. The point of this is to keep the damp outside air where it should be – outside. However, if the house is pulling apart and there are foundation cracks, you’re going to find that the air outside is going to seep into the house, making it heavy and humid inside, too!
- The walls aren’t straight, are they? Can you see a bend in the walls of your home? This should definitely not be this way! You will find that the walls can crack from pressing and stretching, so you should consider that your foundations may also be unsettled and uneven. When this is the case, the walls can bend and turn at odd angles. Something serious has gone wrong when this happens, and you should get your foundations looked at when this is the case.
- Those baseboards are looking loose, right? When the walls begin to shift slightly, the baseboards will suddenly have a gap to them and that shouldn’t be there. If you’re noticing the baseboards peeling away from the walls, you’ll see that the foundations are not in the right place at all!
