A kitchen remodel is a major undertaking. If you are going to spend the time and money, you will want to make sure you get your dream kitchen. It is a space in which you cook, clean, eat and entertain; it has to suit your needs and look great at the same time. It can be a challenge to strike the perfect balance, but here, we have some tips to help you with your dream kitchen design.
Have a plan
Your decision to renovate was most likely motivated by a number of issues with your existing kitchen. Begin by going through your kitchen and writing down everything you don’t like about it. Then describe how you want it to look in your ideal kitchen. For example, if you start by saying that there is not enough storage space, then you can note down how you may solve it – adding more kitchen cabinets is the most obvious solution for this. As you work through the list, decide what is absolutely necessary.
Keep your budget in mind
Before you go mad with handles, countertops, and illumination, you should make a budget. After the non-negotiable items have been addressed, you may need to reassess your list and decide what you want to have. You will also need to think about the appliances you want, the electrical and plumbing work, the permits, and any contractors that you may need to hire – these all cost.
Make sure it does the job it needs to do
Remember the two most important tasks in the kitchen: cooking and cleaning.
This should be reflected in the materials you use; avoid porous materials that will trap stains and make cleaning more difficult. You will also want a decent-sized sink area unless you want to be washing up after every pot you use while cooking and that you can grab the spices/utensils/pans from where you stand to cook. If it doesn’t flow and function properly, it is going to annoy you.
Think about the materials that you use
The design of your kitchen should complement the rest of the house. If you’re going to have an open-plan kitchen, you will want to keep the flow and look consistent from room to room. You can accomplish this by using a color palette and materials that are similar to the rest of the rooms. For example, if you have wood flooring in your living room, you may want to continue the look by using wood flooring in the kitchen as well. You will want to select materials that are high-quality, long-lasting, and within your budget.
Similarly, if you want to bring a minimalist design to your kitchen, avoid mixing and matching extreme colors and textures instead collect a few unique pieces such as a porcelain teapot and mugs made of the same material and put them on an open shelving area in the kitchen.
Love your appliances
Your kitchen’s appliances will either make or break it. Will all of your effort be worth it if you love the design but despise your cooker or fridge? Learn about the features of various appliances and decide which ones you must have. All of them should be Energy Star rated.
Taking on a large kitchen renovation project can be a challenging task. It doesn’t have to be, especially given the amount of effort and money you intend to put in. However, your dream kitchen will undoubtedly impress your family and friends and it may even compel them to scrutinize their own kitchens.
