It is important to know the foundational poses when beginning your yoga practice. More important than your form is your comfortability with yourself. Yoga, especially for beginners, is not meant to be a stressful experience at all! In fact it is intended and must be quite the opposite. Yoga has amazing physical strength benefits but the true joy and benefit comes from your ability to connect with yourself, control your breathing, focus your mind, and relax. Sinking deeper and deeper into each pose while slipping further and further away from the stress of life and into your self awareness. Below are 10 of what I think are some of the foundational yoga poses. You should practice these poses at home. It will begin to build your core and confidence.
Tree Pose
Downward Facing Dog
Plank Pose
Childs Pose
Warrior One
Warrior Two
Mini Cobra
Cobra
Triangle Pose
Meditation Pose
Sun Salute
Now that you have reviewed these amazing poses make sure to practice them regularly. After a few weeks or even days of regular practice you will begin to notice a huge difference in your flexibility and stability. Building this foundation will ensure that you become s successfully practicing yogi! If I had to narrow this list down to two poses to focus on it would be Downward Facing Dog and Warrior Two. Down dog focuses on stretching your hamstrings (the back of your legs) and opens your shoulders. Focusing on down dog will help your flexibility because the hamstrings are large and take time to gain that flexibility. Warrior two strengthens your core and begins to improve your balance. Balance and flexibility are key to yoga but also very helpful in life. Calm your mind, connect with yourself, and become present in your practice and your day to day life.
