Well……we made it. We weathered the storm and made it through. Miami Beach only suffered some rain, a few puddles, and a a couple branches knocked down. Central Florida was hit much worse. I used to live in central florida. I still have friends and family in the area. So when I got a call early Saturday morning, asking for help, I packed up the kids and starting driving North. When I arrived I realized why they had called. The wind gusts there had knocked down huge trees. No one had power, many people didn’t have running water, and the curfew had just been lifted. Everyone was out getting gas for their generators, food for their families, or trying to move power lines & trees to make the roads drivable again. The homes of my friends and family were a mess, but thankfully the houses didn’t suffer too much – they were still livable. (I know others who weren’t so Lucky. My friend Sara’s house was completely destroyed when I giant tree fell through the roof!) So we strapped up our boots and started the clean up. With chainsaws we cut up the big branches and trees and piled them up in front of the houses. Then we raked the whole yard piling the moss & debris – then added it to the pile. We cleared the roof, emptied the gutters, and mowed the grass. Then we moved on to the next house! We cooked on propane camping stoves and green egg grills till the power came back on.
Thankfully, right before we left Sunday night, the power was restored. A team of electrition guys from Louisiana had come to Florida to help replace the power lines and poles. They worked continuously until it was restored, and knocked on the doors to make sure everyones air and lights were working. They were willing to come in and check out the breakers to make sure it was all functioning. It was so kind! I believe you find yourself in the service of others. It’s something I’ve learned as a Nurse and a Mother. When you feel inadequate or “not enough” it may be because you are not serving others enough with a pure attitude.
If you are selflessly serving, giving more than you expect to receive – you are enough.
Thank you all for following Hurricane Matthew with me, here on my blog or on snapchat, Instagram & Facebook.
Hopefully its not something we do again together anytime soon!
