Dancing is a wonderful thing, it is good for the mind, body, and soul. The best thing about dancing is that anyone can dance, all it takes is a bit of enthusiasm and a desire to get moving. If you are sitting there thinking it is too late for you then think again!

Watch YouTube Tutorials
The internet is a weird and wonderful place, and it thankfully has graced us with millions of resources to help us learn how to dance. No matter what dance, whether it is the Samba, the Fox Trot, or one of the latest Tik Tok dance trends, there is literally a tutorial for everything. Spend some time browsing through options and if you seriously follow the tutorials and take the time to practice, you will be picking up the steps in no time. Spend Some Time On Tik Tok
Depending on how old you are, you may or may not be familiar with a new app called Tik Tok. It has taken the world by storm, and the app uses short-form videos that last between 15 seconds to one minute. These videos are shared across the social media platform and focus on dance, comedy, entertainment, and education. The number of dance routines and trends on there is immense. The more popular dance trends will be repeated again and again by different users who all put their own spin on it. It does not matter how old you are, download the app and have some fun. Consider learning some dances with a friend or family member as a lot of the trends use more than one dancer. That way you can have fun together and keep each other motivated. If you have young kids then there are plenty of sweet songs to dance to as well. You will see the same moves time and time again, hopefully so much so that you will begin to learn the moves just from having watched them.

Confidence Is Key
As with anything in life, confidence is always key. So, even if you think you are a terrible dancer with no rhythm, then just remember that does not matter! The more self-conscious and aware you are, the more this is going to restrict you and hold you back. Feeling shy is normal, but this will automatically stiffen up your body and it is a lot harder to move freely to the beat if all you are thinking about is feeling awkward. The saying ‘fake it until you make it’ is apt in this situation because you might not always feel super confident but you can trick your body and mind into thinking you are. The main way to do this is through smiling and your body language. Consider doing the superman pose (legs shoulder-width apart, hands-on-hips, chest puffed out and chin helped up high). Holding this pose has been proven to help a person feel more confident in themselves, and so you have nothing to lose by giving it a go.
- Start Slow
It can be tempting to jump in headfirst and try to learn all the hardest dance moves, but if you do this you are likely not going to pick it up as quickly as you like and end up feeling disheartened. There are some incredible dances out there that are done to Slow Songs and because of the slower rhythm, the steps in the dance are much easier to follow. Mastering the slower dances first will give you a foundation of skills that you can then transcribe into faster rhythms. Also, starting slow is a great way to build your confidence as you start to realize that you actually can pick up dance moves and that it is not too late after all.

Practice Makes Perfect
A lot of people hate this saying, however, practice really does make perfect, especially within this context. If you don’t get something right away, that is completely normal and nobody becomes an expert right away. This doesn’t mean that you have to invest hours on end, blistering your feet trying to learn a couple of dances. That sucks out of the fun of the process. Instead, when you have five minutes here and there you can get up, put on one of your favorite songs, and have a good old-fashioned boogie. Also, if you are someone who now works from home because of coronavirus, you might find yourself sitting at your desk at home all day every day. Next time you are feeling a bit drowsy, take a break and have a dance! Nothing will quite wake you up like a good song and dance (followed by a coffee of course).
The key takeaway is to not give up and just to simply invest a bit of time into your learning.

Just Have Fun With It
Last, but certainly not least, you need to remember to just have fun along the way. Dancing is meant to be an enjoyable experience and if you go into it trying to be great at everything then that will really suck the joy out of it. The more relaxed you are the easier the rhythm is going to flow, and the more likely you are to keep up with the learning journey. Don’t beat yourself up or get angry if you can’t do something, instead focus on the things you can do. If you aren’t having fun then just move onto the next popular dance trend, there are so many to choose from that you will be sure to find one that helps get you back in the dancing mood.
The main thing to take away from this post is that it is never too late to learn to dance and if you want to learn a couple of sweet moves, then just have fun, let your body feel free, and take on that new level of confidence to help you shine.
