Mary Poppins Returns | Walt Disney Studios | Rated PG
Let me preface this article with: This is Not a Remake. This movie, which debuted December 19, 2018 is more of a sequel to the original. This is a beautifully made continuation of the story that you already love…..53 years later. You know that when the first one ended you wanted more. Well here you go, Disney is now giving you some brand new fantastical adventures on Cherry Tree Lane.

Mary Poppins Returns | The Storyline
The movie itself takes place in Depression-era London. The storyline begins years after the first Mary Poppins left, Jane and Michael are now all grown up. Mary Poppins returns for the Banks family because they need her once again. They have lost their joy after a deep personal loss. Mary Poppins does what she does best, use her magic to bring wonder back into the lives of those who need it most!
Mary Poppins Returns | The Cast
Thankfully Lin Manuel Miranda lends us his talent in the film. He plays an optimistic street lamplighter. (Which is so ironic because he already breaths light and life into every project he touches.) His singing, dancing and personality will undoubtably shoot this film into award season! I could not imagine Mary Poppins Returns without him. This Puerto-rican did a nice job on that east cockney accent – I adored it!
Disney made an excellent choice when they extended the offer to the ever classy Emily Blount! I thought she appeared stiff in the first few scenes. But as her musical numbers began she loosened up to be a suprisely wonderful singer and dancer! She can dance and sing effortlessly. Emily Blount is practically perfect in every way as she transforms into the reimagined Mary Poppins of 2018.
Never fear, it wouldn’t be a Mary Poppins Returns movie without the incredibly talented and loved Dick Van Dyke. Wait till you see him dancing and singing. He hasn’t aged a day since 1964. Just as cheery as ever. Dick Van Dyke plays a character named Mr. Dawes, Jr who is the retired chairman of the bank.
If you are awaiting a Julie Andrews cameo…um, so was I! Sadly, she decided not to pop in, sources say she didn’t want to steal the limelight from Emily Blount. How Julie Andrews is that?
Speaking of cameos, Meryl Streep has a role as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady. Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins.

There is all NEW original music in this sequel! That part I am SO excited about. The first thing I did when I got out of the movie theater was download the soundtrack! Who remembers the incredible classics from the first movie? Well get ready for the new ones to charm you just the same!
The movie is directed by Rob Marshall. He was the director for Pirates of the Caribbean, Chicago and Into the Woods. I know right, pretty impressive resume!
The Mary Poppins Returns screenplay is by David Magee and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca based on the ORIGINAL Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers.
