It’s not always easy, let alone apparent, to understand the scope of cultural diversity in the area you inhabit. If it’s difficult to think this way about your local town or city, just imagine how hard it is to do the same with your country. As a national, you have a very limited experiential understanding of your country. You will never explore all of it, particularly if you’re in a huge country such as the USA. This does not mean the pursuit is not worth trying. In fact, it could mean just the opposite.
But what does knowing about your surroundings net you? How can it improve you as a person? Actually, it could lend you a fair amount, and here’s what:
Where do you often head to on vacation? Do you prefer the sand of foreign shores, or the ice-capped mountains featuring some of the best ski slopes in the world? No matter what you enjoy, you likely haven’t experienced all your interest has to offer. Moreover, how close to your personal destination have you travelled on vacation? You might be surprised just how fun, eye opening and frankly cheap this can be. For example, if you live in a northern US state, why not try heading to Canada?
The municipalities of Canada all offer something fresh, from thoroughly clean and beautiful hotels, landscapes and people in Alberta through accommodation at Courtyard Calgary South, or heading to the frozen ice rinks of Manitoba, you could truly experience something completely different seemingly on your doorstep? The best part? Visiting will inform you that you could do this at any time, which could be excellent for stress busting and crafting convenient vacational memories.
You might have already gone on a food tour around your surrounding area, but how much food did you truly sample? Could you have potentially explored even more? Often populations are divided into districts, at least on a restaurant level. Could the Chinese area of your city, also lend you some truly authentic and beautiful Chinese cuisine, outside of the hollow corporate representations of said culture? You’ll only know if you travel there. Heading a few miles out of your city, where you are unlikely to travel can unlock to you and your partner a wealth of eating experiences. If you’re half as hungry as we are, you could truly be allowing yourself experiences in taste sensations.
We’re willing to bet that if you step outside of your neighborhood and actually talk to people, you’ll realize that your country is much more harmonious that your news cycle would have you believe. It can also put you in touch with new cultures. This can inform your education of them from a one on one perspective, and really give you a balanced understanding of the makeup of your city. We’re not suggesting you head out and statistically count the difference in people you see, but rather use their businesses, try their restaurants, attempt their activities and listen to their music. This can inform you as a person and help you form a more cohesive idea of the makeup of your state or city.
With these tips, knowing more about your surroundings will become an effort in developing yourself as a citizen.
