There are so many questions about Paracetamol after the recent Coronavirus and COVID-19 pandemic. Europe is claiming a shortage and reports hoarding of the drug Paracetamol. America is claiming empty shelves where Tylenol used to be and customers are being told to buy “acetaminophen” instead. What is the difference between these drugs? Absolutely nothing. Let me explain.
What is Paracetamol?
Paracetamol is used for mild to moderate pain relief. It can be used in cold medicine. Paracetamol is also given to treat fevers. Higher doses may lead to toxicity, including liver failure. Some people have a serious skin reactions. Paracetamol is very commonly given in European countries. Paracetamol is used along with other drugs to treat the mild symptoms of Coronavirus COVID-19.
What is Tylenol?
Tylenol is an American brand drug advertised for reducing pain, reducing fever, and relieving the symptoms of allergies, colds and the flu. Overdoses can cause toxicity as in liver failure as well as a skin rash called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS).
Tylenol is used along with other drugs to treat the mild symptoms of Coronavirus COVID-19.
What is Acetaminophen?
Acetaminophen is the generic name for Tylenol. Acetaminophen is a drug used for temporarily relief of pain and to temporarily reduce fever. Sound familiar? It turns out Paracetamol, Tylenol and Acetaminophen are the same thing. They are called different names in different countries due to manufacturers. The name also changes depending on whether the drug is formulated for oral use, rectal use, IV use, etc.
Acetaminophen is used along with other drugs to treat the mild symptoms of Coronavirus COVID-19.

A famous paracétamol brand used in France is called “Doliprane”
The only thing that kills my headache is a product I have to import from the USA. Walgreens Extra Strength Headache Relief which contains the following: Acetaminophen, Aspirin (NSAID) and Caffeine. This and Equate (another brand) are the only thing that will kill my headaches. ONE tablet is all it takes and my headache is gone in about 15-20 minutes. I’ve been suffering with headaches all my life and Walgreens and Equate being the only things which works for me.
Panadol, Tylenol, acetaminophen, paracetamol, on their own do absolutely nothing. May as well be taking a ‘placebo’.
Maybe local manufacturers should take note and make something like Walgreens or Equate Headache Relief.
Cheers
Hi Malou,
This sounds like a combination drug which doesn’t have as many applications as the single drugs / ingredients it’s made of, maybe that’s why it’s not easy to find.
After consulting with your doctor you can definitely figure out a combination of locally found drugs.
I’ve often combined an NSAID and an acetaminophen as a painkiller as both work through different mechanisms in the body and the combination is pretty powerful. Caffeine of course is easy to find as well – for that too I’d recommend a pill form rather than a caffeine drink.
Caffeine on its own too can sometimes do the trick for me for headaches as well. Caffeine + electrolytes and water.
