From beauty treatments to just spending a little time to ourselves, it is absolutely critical that we treat ourselves. But as parents, sometimes we forgo the little things that bring us joy, thinking we’ve got to spend more time and resources on the children. Of course, there’s a lot to be said for keeping the household afloat, but if we are constantly exerting ourselves to the point of exhaustion at the end of the day and we’re not doing anything to make us feel good about ourselves, we are not putting that metaphorical breathing apparatus on. They say that if the air mask comes down mid-flight, you should put yours on first before you start to help others. This is why treating yourself is so important, and it can help from time to time to know the mental health benefits.
It is Self-care
You may be lusting after something from your favorite jewelry store but think you don’t deserve it because you can’t afford it or you are looking long into the future and are just trying to keep expenses down. But that thing you buy for yourself is self-care and self-compassion. If you are experiencing issues with your mental health, for example, feeling emotionally exhausted, self-care is the most important tool, and treats can be fantastic for people with a depressive mindset because this helps you think about the concept of self-worth. A little indulgence is so important because it reinforces the fact that you are important to yourself.
It Reinforces Positive Behavior
Think about a dog that’s given a treat for good behavior, they will continue to be on their best behavior. Your child that gets what they want after being good will, one day, flick on a switch in their brain that says “if I continue to be good, I will continue to have nice things.” The same thing counts for you. Positive reinforcement for yourself for working harder, being more disciplined, or recognizing that you need a pick-me-up will reinforce those levels of self-care and self-regard. A small reward is all it takes. Positive behaviors are so important to the concept of being happy in the round that you should think about the little things that make you feel fantastic, even if it’s an indulgent sweet treat. Of course, remember, keep everything in moderation!
It Sets a Great Example
You may feel that the ends are frayed if your children are constantly draining your resources. This is why spending time on yourself should be a regular practice because it’s not just about getting away and having a few moments to yourself, but spending time on yourself sets an example to others that everybody must pay adequate attention to themselves. When you start to realize that you’re not doing enough to nurture yourself, you can feel anxiety all too often. This is so important for us to set an example, especially to our children that rewarding and caring for ourselves will do so much in the long run.
