You would have thought that white might be the best color to wear to beat the heat. After all, whenever you look at pictures of cities in sun-baked locales, their buildings always seem to be white plaster, shining beautifully in the sun.

But it turns out that white isn’t always the best color. While it reflects plenty of visible light (making it appear white), it doesn’t reflect infrared light very well, which is the type of light that really counts when it comes to heat. In summer, you want to reflect as much of it as possible.

There are also a couple of additional reasons why you might want to avoid white:-

  1. It stains easily and can look dirty after a day outdoors
  2. It shows sweat stains more than darker colors, making you look unhygienic

Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to choose colors to help you beat the heat. Here’s what we would recommend.

Choose Black Or Blue

While it might be the opposite of what people taught you, the best colors to wear in hot weather are blue and blue. It turns out that these dark shades are cooler than white in hot weather.

While black and blue absorb a lot of visible light, they are better at emitting infrared than white. As such, they actually radiate energy away from your body faster, helping you cool down.

Have you ever noticed how popular black is in warm Middle Eastern countries? The reason for this is the heat-shedding ability. Black protects the wearer from the sun and helps them stay cool, even in the most challenging conditions.

So there you have it: the best colors to wear to beat the heat are black and blue. Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to these colors only. You can also experiment with other dark or cool shades, such as purple, green, or gray. You can also try wearing bright colors that do a good job of reflecting incoming heat.

What About Fabrics?

Of course, putting on a thick black coat on a warm summer’s day is going to make you feel hot. (The same would be true of a white coat). Therefore, choose lightweight fabrics that have a breathable material. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics, too, since these help your body lose heat via evaporation. This can also make a difference in how warm you feel in hot weather.
