A trip to the Maldives is synonymous with luxury strolls along white, sandy beaches, sipping cocktails from a deckchair by the sea or a hotel pool, and spending time with the person you love the most. But while this glamour visage of the archipelagic state is enough to entice 1.6 million tourists a year, they aren’t all honeymooners.
While it might surprise some, children are just as welcome in this lush tropical paradise as us big kids are. And why not? Building sandcastles on beaches, splashing in the sea, team games and sports, and hotel play areas; it stands to reason that the little ones will have just as much fun on a trip to the Maldives as anyone else.
If you’re thinking about picking the island nation as your next family travel destination, you’ve made a wise choice. That said, there might be some factors you’ll want to keep in mind before you travel. To make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime trip, remember these three important snippets of advice.

1. Understand the seasons
Unlike countries in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, the Maldives’ close proximity to the equator means that traditional seasons don’t really exist. Instead of the four quarters of the year we’ve come to associate with the passage of time, they instead separate them into the dry (December to April) and rainy (May to November) seasons.
And trust us when we say that there’s a huge contrast between the two times of year when it comes to precipitation. Just 50mm of rain falls on average in February, while as much as 243mm can be expected in September.
2. Make sure they’re vaccinated
Vaccinations existed before COVID-19. Aside from confirming your regular recommended vaccines are up to date, it’s also strongly advised to have the whole family protected against Tetanus. This is particularly important for kids, who won’t have as strong an immune system as a fully grown adult.
While they’re less of a necessity, it’s also best to get protected against the following diseases:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Typhoid
We understand that getting an injection isn’t at the top of most peoples’ priority list, but it’s an important step in keeping your family safe before the holiday of a lifetime.

3. Make sure there’s a buffet-style menu
Let’s not fool ourselves – kids can be fussy eaters. And while you might want to tuck into local delicacies like fried yams, fish curry, and Maldivian live lobster, children’s palates are not quite that refined.
For that reason, make sure any resort you’re staying at has a buffet-style menu, to guarantee there’s always something they’re going to want to eat. You can take the kid out of McDonald’s, but not the McDonald’s out of the kid.

Does a holiday to the Maldives with the kids sound a lot more doable after all? Don’t be put off travelling to this idyllic location with the little ones. They (and you) will forge lifelong memories. See you there.
