You guys……This Zika Virus is a thing now. It’s the new Malaria. There have been CONFIRMED cases in south florida so I think we should be super informed.
Here it goes: the virus is spread through mosquito bites. So one bites an infected person, then it bites you, then you are infected. The symptoms are: fevers, joint pain, rash, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms are more severe for babies and pregnant women.
There is no “cure” – just like the flu – you need rest and lots of fluids.
How do you prevent the Zika virus?
Decrease your chances of getting bit by mosquitos!
You can use DEET filled insect repellent sprays, but who wants to absorb all those chemicals and smell like that? Here are some SAFE ways to keep the mosquitos away.
- Burning sage bundles: Ok……This looks super hippie (and hey who am I fooling?) You might look like the crazy lady redirecting the Chi and warding off evil spirits – but in a sense you are! Mosquitos hate the scent of Sage! I think its lovely – it reminds me of thanksgiving. Directions: Light one end of the bundle and walk around the perimeter of your camp. Then set it down where the wind will carry the vapors through your site. It will burn for a few minutes longer. This really really works!

- All Terrain Kids Herbal Armor DEET-free Natural Insect Repellent: This stuff is the best. Its a bit more expensive than the normal chemical filled sprays. But it smells better and your kids aren’t absorbing carcinogens. The ingredients are just oils that naturally repel bugs. It wont ruin your clothes. It wont come off when your kids sweat. And even the most sensitive skin (my daisy) can tolerate it. I did find that it needs to be reapplied every 3 hours or so. (Which is not bad) Buy some HERE.
- Lastly, there is a product called ThermaCELL. It’s a hand held repellent burner that you can wear or place around you. It uses butane cartridges and a synthetic form of the natural repellent found in chrysanthemums. It works very well and covers a large area. There is no open flame so its safe to use around kids.
